How Many Cards Are in a Master Set? Every Current Pokemon Set Counted

Same set, three honest answers, depending on how far you are taking it.

Ask how many cards are in a set and the printed number on the card is only the first answer. Every modern Pokemon set has three sizes, and a master set collector needs the third.

The main set is the count printed on every card, the 84 in 001/084. The set with secret rares adds the cards numbered above that, the illustration rares, special illustration rares and hyper rares that come out of the same packs. The master set adds the reverse holo version of every card that has one, which for most sets is every common, uncommon and rare.

A grand master set goes further still, adding the promos, stamped cards and error cards printed around the expansion. It has no fixed count, which is why it is not in the tables below. Our guide to what a master set is covers the tiers and the arguments at the edges. This page is the numbers.

Mega Evolution era: every set counted

From 194 to 473 cards, depending on the set.

Which master sets fit in one binder?

A 20 page 9 pocket binder holds 360 sleeved cards. Here is what that means per set.

Of the 29 sets counted here, 16 fit in a single 360 card binder as a full master set and 13 do not. The ones that need two binders, largest first: Fusion Strike (501), Ascended Heroes (473), Paldea Evolved (455), Scarlet & Violet (444), Paradox Rift (428), Surging Sparks (417), Destined Rivals (409), Obsidian Flames (406), Lost Origin (396), Silver Tempest (387), Astral Radiance (374), Twilight Masquerade (373), Evolving Skies (369).

The closest fits are worth knowing about. 151 at 360, Temporal Forces at 358, Crown Zenith at 342 all go in one binder, but with very few empty pockets, so there is no room for the promos if you decide to add them.

Two binders is not a problem, it is a choice. Or run the main set and secrets in one and the reverse holos in the other, which is how a lot of collectors display them anyway.

Why the master set is not double the main set

The most repeated claim in master set collecting, checked against every set on this page.

The folklore says a master set is double the numbered set, because every card has a reverse holo. It is not, because the higher rarities do not get one. Across the 29 sets counted here, between 33% and 77% of the cards in a set have a reverse holo version, so the master set runs from 1.33 to 1.77 times the numbered set, about 1.6 times on average.

Measured against the printed main set count instead, the number on the card, a master set is more than double in every set here, from 1.8 to 3.6 times, because the secret rares stack on top of the reverse holos. So the double rule is wrong in both directions: less than double the numbered set, more than double the printed count. Which is why the only number worth remembering is the master set total in the tables above.

Which cards get a reverse holo changed between eras, and our checklists record it. In the Sword and Shield sets the reverse holo runs across commons, uncommons, rares and holo rares. In the Scarlet and Violet and Mega Evolution sets it runs across commons, uncommons and rares, and stops at the ex tier. Illustration rares, special illustration rares and hyper rares never have one, because the card is already a special finish.

That is the whole reason the master set column is smaller than people expect, and the reason a printed checklist that knows which cards have a reverse version saves a lot of pointless hunting. The full explanation is in reverse holo versus holo.

How to use these numbers

Three decisions the count makes for you.

The count is not trivia. It decides the binder, it decides the budget, and it decides whether the set is a project you will finish.

What to do with the master set count

1. Buy the right number of binders. Under 360, one binder. Over 360, two. The table above has the answer for every set.
2. Get the checklist that matches the count. Our master set checklists list every card and mark the ones with a reverse holo, so the count on the page is the count on the checklist.
3. Fill the gaps with placeholders. A placeholder set gives every slot in the count a printed marker, so the binder shows the shape of the set on day one and you can see exactly what is left.
4. Pick a first set from the small end. A master set under 200 cards is a project you can finish in a season. One over 400 is a year, and a second binder.
